Just coming up to 10k in my 130 CDTI :)and the oil warning light came on telling me to fill up with oil  - checked the dipstick the week before and it was fine - Just thrown a litre in tro get 1/2 way up the dipstick - Is this normal in Vxh's  as my previous cars I never topped up the oil between services

Quite normal, uses about 0.5l per 1000 miles, it's in the manual :)
You'll find the usage gets less as the mileage increases. Hope you put in the right stuff 5w-30.

My vectra-c was rather heavy on oil until it had cover a few miles. I was informed that it was due to the fact that VX cylinder bores are extremely smoothly finished (more than usual apparently) and as a result it tends to take a little longer for rings to bed in properly. Once it had reached around 15k miles it dropped right down to almost no oil use at all.

After 10k miles I would have thought it would now be starting to use much less oil. Dont forget it needs fully synthetic 5/30 though 5/40 should be okay too.

Using a drop of oil early in life on VX/Opel engines does seem quite normal.

Having said that, I've done about 2.5k miles on my 1.8, and its not used any oil, but I believe the above comments do apply to the diesels. IME anyway.

Hi NRG

Yes disappointed with my mpg too. Inland Revenue only allows 46mpg for claiming back on this -
Motorway all day get 50+ mpg
town driving 42 - 45 mpg
Have had to learn to be very light footed and keep the revs below 2000 to get these returns - If I drive it with a heavy foot mpg plummits

I see no change on the dip-stick at 3.5k of this 1.8 but i think 20k or a year is far too long before service.Wondering if i can do an oil change myself at 10k?

I agree about the 20k periods. I took my previous 56 plate Vec-c 150 in to the dealer and had the oil changed every 10k miles, used to cost about £75 for fully synthetic oil and filter change. I think it pays dividends in the long run.

I may have a look at saving a little money and doing it myself this time, as there is lots more room around the engine on the 1.8vvt than the diesels to work. Have to see.

its quite normal consumption depends on a few conditions to when they consume more than normal

It's definately Fully Synthetic 5/30w oil. (for ALL the Insignia range)

The vx oil is expensive from your local dealer. (about £12 to £13 a litre)
However you can get the same VX oil off Fleabay quite cheap for 5ltrs.

or any fully synthetic oil marked. GM-LL-B-025

I've just bought Castrol Edge 0W-30 as a top-up oil. The Owner's Manual gives a range of recommended viscosities from 0W-30 up to 5W-40.

Being in Scotland where we tend to get colder and longer winters, I think the 0W-30 is a better choice.

My 160CDti has passed 5k today and the oil is halfway down the dipstick - I mostly drive motorways and am getting around 38mpg.
My previous Vec 150 diesel had poor consumption to start with but dramatically improved when I passed 50k - I was regularly getting 48-50mpg.

I dont think I would be too happy with 38mpg if I had a diesel, especially on long motorway runs.

I used to do a lot of motorway driving when I had my Vec-c cdti 150 and mpg was always in the mid to high forties, usually around 650 miles on a 60ltrs tank. It seems quite a few people are only getting mediocre diesel consumption, strange.

I'm getting 34mpg out of my 1.8vvt petrol version.

I used to have a Zafira 2ltr diesel that throughout its 80k life used 1
litre of oil per 1000 miles.
With my Vectra 150 diesel I never had to add oil at all.
The difference in engines amazing.

Hi,

Have you guys actually worked out with paper and pen what the MPG is on your Insignias and are not just relying on the trip computer?

My Dad has an Insignia 160 Diesel Elite. The trip computer tells him he has averaged 38mpg but when he actually works it out it is doing 44mpg. It seems some Insignia trip computers do not work out the mpg very acurately.
Worth checking yours with paper and pen when you next fill up.:)
