Would it be invalidating the warranty to do an interim oil and filter change, say, at 10k miles and what about access to drain plug etc?
Would this require specialist Vaux tools?
I'm not sure if there is any merit in doing it, does anyone think 20k or a year is good enough?
I know if I could do it I would not record it and then let the dealers do it at the prescribed point.
would they be saying "Here! who's been at this? eh? eh? ":eek::)

No that would not happen, as long as you dont damage any bolts, they wont be bothered, its not their car.

I have always had the oil and filter changed at the 10k interim periods. I did it on the vec-c and I shall do it on this car too. Money well spent IMO.
I had mine done at the vx dealers (cost around £75) Fully synthetic oils are good, but I still think 20k is rather a lot between oil changes, doing it more frequently can only bring long term benefits IMO.

I see no problem doing it yourself, and will not invalidate warranty. (why should they know anyway)

Not sure what tools you may need, I assume a socket to remove sump plug, and another to release oil filter, and something to drain the oil into.
No idea what the socket sizes are unfortunately. I may have a look myself to see how easy it is on my 1.8 as there is quite a lot of room around the engine, unlike the diesel which has very little room, unless you can get right under the car to release the oil filter.

Thanks! that is encouraging, will just have a look at it all in the meantime.

If you use Vauxhall oil (to fully synthetic spec) & their own brand oil filter they can't invalidate warranty under EU regulations.
