» Featured Car For November: Vauxhall Nova

The Vauxhall Nova was launched in April 1983 and replaced the Vauxhall Chevette. The Nova was known as the Opel Corsa A in every country apart from Great Britain. On launch there was only the a 2dr saloon and a 3 dr hatchback available, the 4 and 5 dr versions followed in 1984.

There were many engines available from the pushrod 1.0 to the ohc 1.3 used in the 1.3GL and the sporty SR models. There were many special additions produced over the years but the most noteable was the Nova sport produced in 1983 to homolgate the sub 1300 class of Group A rallying for the British Championship, there was 500 of these models produced and when one comes up for sale they command a high premium especially if they are in good original condition. The car was given a facelift in 1990 with a restyled front end and a new dashboard amongst the changes. There were also changes to the engines as well with a 1.4 replacing the 1.3 and the SR was made into the SRi with the addition of fuel injection, by 1992 the Nova was starting to show its age and by this time all models were now fuel injected.

There were also the 1.6 Injection models, which in MK1 form was the GTE and in MK2 for was the GSi.
A very large number are still used every weekend on tarmac, gravel and forest rallies and also in navigation rallying.

The Nova is still a very much loved car and thankfully the days of the Nova being 'chavved' within an inch of its life are coming to an end. The cars are nearly always owned by enthusiasts now who love and cherish them and tastefully modify them. The Nova was replaced by the Corsa B in 1993.
